Active8-Planet Event in Ljubljana

Industry perspective on participation in Active8-Planet project
Robert Podlipnik is a Project Manager in a company Endava, a business representative in Active8-Planet. He shares his view on working closely with anthropologists: “Working together with anthropologists was a big added value, since the engineering mindset is “what to do and how to do it”, but with the help of anthropologists we started asking ourselves “why we are doing it”.
Social sustainability, growth and capacity building
”Every time when you get into these situations when you see people grow, like in the #Active8Planet project, both with the students and the teachers, it just reminds me, why we work at the universities with students. I really like these touchpoints, when you see the growth and the capacity building, ” tells Vaike Fors.
Vaike is an Associate Professor in Pedagogy at the School of Information Technology at Halmstad University. Her area of expertise lies in the fields of visual, sensory and design ethnography.
Don't let unanswered questions hold you back
”I think, there is not a person on this planet that doesn’t think sustainability is important. There is still very big challenge no how, ” says Soesja van Wijgerden. Soesja is a biologist and the Active8-Planet project facilitator at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in Netherlands. She likes to create order in any chaos, preferably in a sustainable way.
I learned how I can do things better
”I think, the biggest success was to reflect on myself, how I can do better. And the biggest failure was, that I thought that I was doing [things] sustainable, but I learned about how I can do better. I learned about my bad habits, ” reflects Maxime.
Maxime is a student of Architecture at #hasselt Hasselt University in Belgium and the Active8-Planet project participant. In the framework of Active8-Planet project, Belgium team created a multiple purpose façade panel to tackle sustainability problems.
Everything is a source of something new
Evy tells: ‘”Whatever material you have, see it as a raw material for something new. The word “trash” doesn’t exist! Whatever material is brought into our society – its a source for something else.”
Evy is a lecturer and project assistant at Hasselt University. Circular economy and upcycling are the underlying theme of her work. She is also a Active8 Planet servant leader at Hasselt University in Belgium.
Question everything
Linnea tells: “Question the way you transport yourself somewhere, the way and what you eat, the way you how you buy clothes. I think that would be a great start to a change when it comes to the climate crisis.”
Linnea Ivetorn is a student of Digital design at Halmstad University in Sweden and one of the Active8 Planet project participants. The focus in this project is on creating reflections and discussions about sustainability in the mobility industry.
Collaboration & learning by doing
”I think that one of the most important aspects, that drives sustainability is collaboration. I feel that our world is pretty much isolated. In order to make more thriving and sustainable world, one thing that is very much-needed is to work together and have a better understanding of each other, ” tells Josine.
Josine Bakkes is a community builder by profession and a people person at heart. She has 7+ experience as community architect all over Europe, co-founded numerous impact initiatives including EuvsVirus Pan- European Hackathon, Hack the Crisis Austria, circle17 and Global Shapers Salzburg Community.
Prepare yourself for the future
”Sustainability for me means taking care of our natural surroundings and social environment with a glance into the future. We prepare ourselves and our surroundings for the future that has to exist for us, ” shares Polona Zabret.
Polona is a student of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at University of Ljubljana and one of the Active8 Planet team members in Slovenia, where the focus is on sustainable mobility and citizen inclusion in the car sharing system in the city of Ljubljana.
Focus group on mobility in Ljubljana
During this academic year, Slovenian Planeteers (also known as members of the Active8-Planet 7+1 team) have been deeply involved in researching mobility practices in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In collaboration with the Endava company, four anthropology students set out to understand mobility patterns and choices a little better. The final act of our research was carried out this week by organising a focus group on mobility in Ljubljana.
